Expensive Hobby is independent, small-scale, and human. We aim to keep things simple.

For retailers

Ordering

  • Orders can be placed by email, through the order form on this website, or directly in our wholesale catalogue with a trade account.

  • Contact us to open a trade account - note this is not required to send orders by email or through the order form.

  • No minimum order quantities, though we appreciate orders across the catalogue where possible.

Pricing

  • The wholesale prices in our catalogue represent a 40% trade discount on the GST exclusive price of titles.

  • In occasional circumstances such as festival events we can provide a 50% trade discount.

Payment

  • First orders are pro-forma (payment up front) unless arranged otherwise.

  • Once we know each other, invoices are due on the 20th of the following month.

  • Payment can be made by bank transfer or credit card via Stripe.

Delivery

  • We're a small team of volunteers and generally pack orders once a week (usually Thursdays).

  • Freight on orders is charged at cost (we don’t mark it up).

  • Orders may be split at our discretion and titles awaiting stock placed on backorder unless arranged otherwise.

  • We do our best to combine shipping on multiple orders where possible.

Returns

  • Sale-or-return is only available for event stock by arrangement. We can provide credit notes for returned stock, or update invoices with final sales figures from the event.

  • Damaged or faulty books will of course be replaced or refunded. Let us know within 7 days of receipt, and we may as you to hold damaged goods for couriers to collect as part of claims processing.

For publishers

What we do

  • We represent and distribute your books to bookstores and other retailers who feature books in their displays.

  • We promote your titles through our website, catalogues, and direct contact with retailers.

  • We take care of orders, shipping, invoicing, and payments.

Supply

  • You send us stock (by agreement) on a consignment basis, unless otherwise arranged.

  • We prefer to receive a minimum of 30-50 copies of any title at a time, and a maximum of 100 unless arranged prior based on expected sales.

  • Please make sure books arrive in saleable condition (no damage, clear barcodes/ISBNs).

  • We expect all titles to have an ISBN (or ISSN for periodicals) — it's free to apply for them from the National Library of New Zealand.

  • We expect your titles to be added to the Nielsen Title Editor database — this is a free service.

  • 6 months after release, we may request to return some stock to you, depending on sales volumes.

Pricing & Payment

  • You set your desired recommended retail price (RRP) for each title.

  • We apply a standard trade discount to determine the wholesale price for retailers.

  • We provide quarterly sales and inventory reports.

  • Publishers invoice us based on sales reports, and we pay out sales less a distribution fee.

  • As of September 2024 the distribution fee is 25% of the wholesale price.

  • Publishers add GST to their payouts if they are registered.

  • Refer to our Wholesale Pricing calculator for more detail.

Returns

  • Unsold stock generally remains your property (consignment).

  • If you need us to send books back to your from our warehouse, additional postage and handling fees will apply.

  • If damaged books are returned, we’ll be in touch to agree on the best solution (return to you, recycle, etc).

Working together

  • Keep us updated on new titles, cover images, blurbs, and anything else that will help us pitch your books.

  • We’ll keep you updated on orders, feedback from retailers, and anything else useful.

  • We're doing this because we believe in independent publishing, not to make money. Keep in mind that most of the work is done by volunteers.
